SLOW DOWN AND SMELL THE COFFEE

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.

Anne Lamott

Just before 8.00am on Friday, 12th January 2007, a young man walked into a Washington DC subway station and took up a position against a wall. He opened his case, removed his violin and started to play. He played for about 40 minutes, during which 1,097 people passed him, most probably rushing to their work place. While he played six pieces by Bach, 27 people donated and he collected the princely sum of $32.17.

When he finished, there was no applause and few noticed. He packed up his violin and left. That man was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest violinists in the world. During that morning commute in a Washington DC subway station, Bell played one of the most intricate pieces of music ever written. He played on a violin handcrafted in 1713 by Antonio Stradivari, worth $3.5 million. Three days earlier, Joshua Bell had played to a sell-out audience at Boston’s Symphony Hall. Those watching paid a minimum of $100 a ticket and yet, only seven people stopped to listen when he played in the subway.

Like so many of us, they were too busy to appreciate the beauty on their morning commute.
